Types of Disabilities

Learning Disability:

The most common Learning Disabilities are Dyslexia,Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia. The most common symptoms of a learning disability:

  • Short attention span
  • ​Poor memory
  • ​Difficulty following Directions
  • ​Inability to discriminate between and amongst letters/numerals and sounds
  • ​Poor reading or writing ability
  • ​Eye hand coordination problems
  • ​Difficulty with sequencing
  • ​Disorganization and other sensory disabilities

Communication Disorders:​

Stuttering, Phonological Disorder, Mixed receptive-expressive language disorder etc. Symptoms of Communication Disorders:

  • ​Problems in speech style, context
  • Problems understanding emotions both their own as well as their peers
  • Bad body language and no eye contact

Emotional and Behavioral Disorders:​

An unexplained inability to learn, or maintain relations with teachers and other kids their age. Depression is also common amongst kids with these disorders. Symptoms include:

  • Inappropriate actions or emotions under normal circumstances
  • Learning difficulties that are not caused by another health factor
  • Difficulty with interpersonal relationships, including relationships with teachers and peers
  • A general feeling of unhappiness or depression
  • Feelings of fear and anxiety related to personal or school matters
  • ​Easily getting annoyed or nervous
  • Often appearing angry
  • Putting blame on others
  • Refusing to follow rules or questioning authority
  • Arguing and throwing temper tantrums
  • Having difficulty in handling frustration

Physical Disabilities:

The most common Physical Disability amongst kids is Cereberal Palsey. Other Physical Disabilities include Spina Bifida and Spinal cord injury.

It is typically marked by a difficulty in accessing the physical and social environment. Thus kids with physical disability may require certain special equipments.

Developmental Disabilities:

Autism and Down's Syndrome are typical examples of developmental disabilities. The most common symptom is the child's inability to achieve specific developmental milestones at expected times.
